How to Select the Source of Operation Command in Delta VFD

This lesson is all about the source of operation command in Delta VFD (variable frequency drive). This operation means ON/OFF control, direction control, Jog control, multi-step speed control, that is the source of operation. There is a list of operation given below,

  1. Operation determined by digital keypad.
  2. Operation determined by external control terminals, keypad STOP is effective.
  3. Operation determined by external control terminals, keypad STOP is ineffective.
  4. Operation determined by RS 485 communication port, keypad STOP is effective.
  5. Operation determined by RS 485 communication port, keypad STOP is ineffective.

The first option means we can start the Delta VFD (variable frequency drive) with the keypad given on the drive (RUN = run the drive, STOP = stop the drive). This is the source of operation by digital keypad, by default. When you will see the parameter details in the manual of Delta VFD, on page number 37 out of 173, parameter number 01, Source of Operation Command,

  1. 00: Operation determined by digital keypad.
  2. 01: Operation determined by external control terminals, keypad STOP is effective.
  3. 02: Operation determined by external control terminals, keypad STOP is ineffective.
  4. 03: Operation determined by RS-485 communication port, keypad STOP is effective.
  5. 04: Operation determined by RS-485 communication port, keypad STOP is ineffective.

Factory default is parameter "00" which determined digital keypad setting. Now, in the Operation determined by digital keypad (below is the diagram of the keypad), we control operation by "RUN, and STOP" button.

Another option is external terminals, below you can see the external terminals picture by which we can control the operation of Delta VFD.

But along with that, keypad "STOP" will also work. Now these terminals (see on the terminal wiring diagram), these are from "M0 to M5", so external terminals says, when you provide ground to these terminals (M0 to M5), then motor can be controlled. So what can be the exact figure, let see the another diagram. 2 Wire Control (1), On/Off & Direction from Toggle Button. This is the source of external control. When ground will be connected to "M0", motor will be running forward direction. When "m0" is open, and ground is not connected, motor is stop. When "M0" is closed, motor will run in forward direction.

We have to enter two parameters,  move to parameter 01, and enter the value 01. Now source of control is external. Now go to parameter 38 and enter 01 to "RUN/STOP" the motor.

External Source Input from the PLC

You can also provides input by any component, such as toggle switch or relays. Here I am going to use a PLC to give input (ground) to operate the motor. Below is the diagram of wiring of control terminals and PLC.

Now, When "Y0" will be switched ON, the ground which is connected to COM terminal of the PLC, will move to "Y0" and "Y0" will supply this input to "M0" which will perform the action there. This is how you can control the operation command. Please watch this practical demonstration tutorial from below for better understanding.
