Principle and Working of AC Motors.

Let's discuss about the working principle of AC motor in details. Let's define the AC motor,

  1. AC motors (Alternating Current Motor) are those electric motors driven by Alternating Current (AC).
  2. The motor that converts the alternating current into mechanical power by using an electromagnetic induction phenomenon is called an AC Motor (Alternating Current Motor).
  3. AC motors are widely used in industry, primarily due to their high efficiency, and their ability to produce constant torque up to the rated speed.

Types of Motor

These two types of AC motors, are widely use, which are;

  1. Induction Motor. (Asynchronous Motor)
  2. Synchronous Motors.
The, in synchronous motor, we have two types further, which are single phase and three phase.

How an AC Motor Works?

Let's discuss the working of an AC motor in the simplest form and point list form. Generally, an AC motor consists of two main parts:
  1. The rotor (Rotor is a shaft between the stator).
  2. The stator.

  1. The stator is the outer shell part of a motor and it remains stationary.
  2. Stator has windings that transform the incoming electricity into a magnetic field. This causes the rotor to become magnetized in the opposite polarity and repel and rotate.
  3. The stator may be wound with two or more sets of windings called poles.
  4. The number of poles dictates the rpm of the motor.
  5. Standard synchronous speeds available are; 900, 1,200, 1,800, and 3,600 rpm.
  6. An induction motor turns slightly slower than a synchronous motor and takes the form of a squirrel-cage motor. The reduction in speed is called motor slip.

Synchronous Motor

The synchronous motor has synchronous speed. At the point when supply is given to synchronous motor, a spinning field is set up. This field attempts to drag the rotor with it, but since of rotor inertia, it couldn't rotate. Consequently, it doesn't deliver any beginning/starting force. Hence, the synchronous motor is not a self-starting over the motor.

Induction Motor

The machine which converts the AC electric power into mechanical power by using an electromagnetic induction phenomenon in called an induction motor. The induction motor classified into two types given below,
  1. Single phase induction motor
  2. Three phase induction motors.
In an induction machine the armature winding fills in as both the armature winding and field winding. At the point when the stator windings associate with an AC supply, the flux delivers noticeable all around hole. The flux turns at a fixed speed called synchronous speed. This turning flux instigates voltages in the stator and rotor winding.

If the rotor circuit shut close, the current flow through the rotor winding and respond with the pivoting flux and it creates the torque. In the consistent express, the rotor pivots at speed exceptionally near synchronous speed.
