Seaman Salary
First of all, the benefit to any job people do is its salary of-course. Well, Maritime jobs typically pay extremely well salary to seaman employees, partly because of the time spent doing these jobs, partly because of the dangers and hard work, and partly because of the skills needed. Here are just a few examples of salary ranges, Please note that these are not fix by any department but these are normal maritime industries pay to seaman, it may be more or less as different ship's organization has their own rule of paying salary:
- Deck Trainee: $2500 per month.
- Able bodied seaman: $3000-4000$ per month.
- Chief Cook: $3000 per month.
- 3rd Assistant Engineer: $4000 per month.
- Third Mate: $5000 per month.
But, Senior ranks in the ship bring in even more money as experience As a chief mate, you can expect an annual salary of about $80,000-125,000, and if you’re the captain, you can expect a six-figure salary, possibly as high as $185,000.
Note that Salaries vary significantly depending on the employer. University and military or federal government jobs may pay less than similar jobs in the private sector, but with better benefits.
Ranks of Seaman
In the Shipping industry, their are many seamen working in different positions or ranks in one ship. I am going to share some main seamen's position with their role in the shipping / marine industry. List of the seamen position are following,
- The Master - On top of every ship, there is the Master. He is the overall commander having absolute authority on board.
Deck Department
- Chief Officer - The Chief Officer is the Master’s second in command. He is the person to take over the control of the ship whenever the Master is incapacitated.
- Second Officer - The second officer is also called the navigational officer.
- Third Officer - He is usually the safety officer on board.
- Able-bodies Seaman (AB) - They are the ones doing all the maintenance jobs on deck like chipping, buffing, painting, washing and greasing.
- Ordinary Seaman (OS) - An Ordinary Seaman is the entry-level rank in the deck department. His duty is very much like the ABs.
Engineering Department ( Engine Department)
- Chief Engineer (C/E) - Chief Engineer (C/E) is the head of the shipboard engineering department.
- Second Engineer (2/E) - Second Engineer (2/E) is the Executive Officer of the ship’s Engine Department.
- Third Engineer (3/E) - Third Engineer (3/E) is responsible to the Second Engineer for normal maintenance and watch keeping duties in ship.
- Fourth Engineer (4/E) - Fourth Engineer's job includes studying and practicing the 3rd Engineer’s duties in the ship.
- Electrician or Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) - Electrician or Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is one of the most vital technical ranks on board. Since a ship is mostly run by automation, an ETO plays a major role in keeping them running at all times. He is also called "one man army in the ship. He handle all electrical electronics maintenance and repairing in the ship.
- Fitter - Fitters are highly skilled workers and are usually found inside the engine workshop.
- Motorman/ Oiler - A Motorman or Oiler’s duty includes inspection and maintenance of pumps, motors, turbines and condensers on board.
- Wiper - The Wiper is the Ordinary Seaman’s a helper in the engine room. His job is that mainly of support to those ranks above him.
