Allen Bradly VFD Practical Demonstration and Understanding

Hi, my name is jahan and we are going to learn variable frequency drive of allen bradley powerflex 4m. This is our lesson number one out of eleven total and here we will discuss the practical demonstration and basics of allen bradley vfd. That's a drive you can see in below picture, that is how allen bradley vfd looks like and in this course or training of allen bradley vfd, we will go step by step alright.

In this article, we will understand the various components of the drive of allen bradley, and its wiring as well. We are using here an allen bradley variable frequency drive (allen bradley vfd) power flex 4m and which is of 0.4 kilowatt, that is the capacity which is core related to the motor capacity. If you are driving a motor having a reading of 0.5 hp, you should use this variable frequency drive. This is very necessary taht your motor reading and your drive's reading should match. You should not connect your drive having lesser rating motor. If your drive is having one hp and your motor is having 0.5 hp still you can run your motor.

This variable frequency drive have input voltage of 230 volts single phase and it can be given single phase or three phase input and the output is 230 volts, three phase.

Allen Bradley VFD  Status Screen

In the screen, you see commanded frequency. This shows what is the present frequency command on your drive. There is a motor run or stop indication as well in on the left hand side of variable frequency drive screen.  More about status screen, we will show you in our next lessons with step by step details.

Wiring Of Allen Bradley VFD

Alright so guys, wiring of a variable frequency drive is not as simple as other circuits or components. If we open the cover of variable frequency drive, you will see the terminals there with different functions. On the top of all terminals, there are few terminals which are actually control terminals. From this control terminals, we can give input of external course to control the speed (frequency) externally. As usually we use external potentiometer to change the frequency of variable frequency drive, to give input of 0 to 10 volts by potentiometer. There is an rj45 port, by which you can control your drive by modpad application using a plc right.

Then you have motor output three phase terminal in which you have to connect motor as shown below.
